URGENT REMINDER! Leadership Position Applications DEADLINE 11/17/2011

Troop 301,

If a scout wants to be considered for ANY leadership position, INCLUDING SPL and Den Chief, he must fill out the LEADERSHIP POSITION APPLICATION and turn it into the SCOUTMASTER by the NOVEMBER 17th meeting.

To date I have only received less than 10 applications.

Every position will require WEEKLY duties that are measureable and almost always include time spent outside the troop meetings.

Boys requesting consideration for positions are expected to “Do their Best” to accomplish 100% of the responsibilities of each job. If they cannot commit to 100% of the job, they should not apply.

We expect the scouts to do their best and to put in 100% effort. We do not expect PERFECTION. Scouts learn but listening and by trial and error. Mistakes are accepted and often expected. What is not accepted is a lack of effort or follow through.

As a scout advances through the ranks, he does NOT earn the right to relax. What he does earn is the right to be given a role of greater responsibility. The expectations are greater for a STAR, LIFE or EAGLE scout than for a TENDERFOOT, 2nd Class of 1st Class scout. Each successive rank requires more effort and is judged to a higher standard.

At the risk of sounding like an ARMY commercial - “BE ALL YOU CAN BE” and step up to give it your best shot.

A scout only succeeds at the challenges he takes on.

Marcos P’s Eagle Project Tuesday November 8th!

Troop 301 Scouts,

Your SPL  will be working on his Eagle Project Tuesday November 8th from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm.

The project is a dog walk behind the Smithtown Animal shelter on Route 25 to the right of Smithtown Ford and the Senior Center.

He could use a lot of help and this time counts as COMMUNITY SERVICE toward advancement.

As there is no school, there should be a lot of scouts available to attend.

Please do the right thing and help him out.

See the SPL for where to set up.

Family members coming to join the scouts for our turkey dinner should come at 2:00 pm Saturday. Please bring a desert to share.

Dinner is planned for 2:00 pm.

All patrols need to provide their own Breakfast for Saturday and Sunday mornings. THE BREAKFASTS NEED TO BE “REAL MEAKS”! (No Shake & Pour) Oatmeal is OK.

We expect Cub scouts and their families from local packs to be joining us. Make them feel welcome.

PLC November 1st – ALL 1st Class & Above Scouts REQUIRED this time.

Troop 301,

With the December elections coming soon, we want to prepare all scouts that may want leadership roles in the future.

As stated in BSA policy, ONLY PATROL LEADERS are elected by the patrols they are in and the SENIOR PATROL LEADER is elected by all the scouts in the troop. Most of the rest are “appointed” by the SPL and/or the Scoutmaster.

All positions for election or appointment are to be done “with the scoutmaster’s approval”.

This means that DEN CHIEFS to SPL’s all have to get approval to run or serve.

There is nothing that says that a boy has to serve in a leadership role or that he is entitled to serve. It is, however, a “requirement” for advancement beyond 1st class.

We want all of you who would like to advance and serve the troop as leaders to be prepared and matched to a position they want to do and can complete successfully.

This requires action and effort on the scouts part and this will be discussed at the November PLC.

Don’t miss it! November 1st at 7:30 pm in the church hall where regular meetings are held (Full Class A)

The LEADERSHIP POSITION APPLICATION can be found HERE.

Pioneering – Starting with the October 27th meeting & PLC November 1st

Troop 301,

We are continuing out skills training with PIONEERING!

Remember: It’s NOT just KNOTS.

Pioneering lets you use knots and lashings to be creative and build things that you need or just want to play with.

To do it safely, you need to have a basic knowledge of the types of rope materials that are out there as well as their limitations.

On October 27th, Mr. Herrmann will present TYPES OF ROPES as well as the KNOTS YOU NEED TO KNOW.

On November 3rd we will move to LASHINGS.

When we don’t use our skills, we lose our skills so brush up on your Knots and Lashings prior to thes meetings.

On our own website we have a page devoted to knots and lashings that can be found HERE

Be sure to watch the video and to check out the link to troop 542′s website:

http://www.bsatroop542.org/Knots.htm

Also coming up is the PLC on NOVEMBER 1st and the VETERAN’S DAY PARADE on NOVEMBER 11th before we head to the Turkey Cookout Campout on the Smithtown Historic Society grounds across from the Smithtown Uniter Methodist Church.

The parade lineup is at 9:30 am at the Capital One bank in St. James. Scouts need to be in FULL CLASS A uniform with their troop fleece. If it is warm, fleeces will be omitted. If you do not have a fleece, wear underarmour (thermal wear) UNDER your uniform. NOTHING SHOULD COVER YOUR UNIFORM OTHER THAN A TROOP FLEECE!.

ONLY BSA UNIFORM HATS ARE PERMITTED! If you dont have one, you are NOT wearing a hat.
