Events from November 2010

Our first real event of November was on the 11th where we marched in the Veteran’s Day Parade.

We met at the Capital One Bank before marching north on Lake Avenue.

Troop 7 followed us and looked good in their full Class A’s and nice straight lines.

When we reached the memorial at St. James Elementary School, there were many people that stayed to show their respect for our Veterans.

Red Morgan (Chaplain) gave a meaningful benediction and Dominick welcomed back home two soldiers from the fighting before leading the crowd in a round of God Bless America. We then returned to the church to help set up for the Church’s craft sale.

Next we had out annual turkey cookout on November 12th thru the 14th at Blydenburgh Park. We arrived at dark and setup camp by lantern whit each patrol grouping their tents together and then after a traditional evening fire the troop turned in.

We got up early the next morning to setup the rest of the camp and it was a cold morning with fingers not always doing what you want them to do but we worked as a team and were soon in business.

While some built the “car port” others tested their pioneering skills constructing a Troop 301 welcome to the families of the troop members and potential future members.

While the adults setup the turkeys, the scouts hiked around the lake.

When the boys returned, they went to work cooking the green beans, stuffing and corn. The Black Raven patrol had washed and wrapped well over 100 white and sweet potatoes prior to leaving on the hike, those were put under the cans with the turkeys and we cooked to perfection when the cans were removed.

The Old Goats were responsible for the Corn Bread which was a big hit cooked in dutch ovens. We all ate and talked for hours and the fire raged until late in the evening. We woke Sunday to frost on everything not under cover and packed up “Leaving No Trace” by 9:00 am.

Thanks to all that made this possible. The list was long but Mr. McGarry for all the shopping and garbage can cooking skills, Nick Dodd for organization of the campout and that really cool poster showing where to setup, as well as Ryan Gavorsky, our SPL elect, for keeping the boys moving dispite being “under the weather”.

Another year, another success.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
