West Hills SNOW update – Friday NO PROBLEM – Saturday you may have issues
Posted by dmbauer in Announcements on February 10, 2012
All attending the West Hills campout,
There is SNOW forecast for late Friday night (light with maybe some rain). It is supposed to change to all snow and continue through mid-day Saturday with 1-3 inches.
This will be perfect for the TRACKING theme of the campout but not so great for those arriving late to the campoute (on Saturday morning).
If you arrive Friday as the campout is scheduled and you DO NOT have 4-wheel-drive, park in the lot off HIGHHOLD DRIVE. See picture below and click it to enlarge.
Walk down the trail and around the back of the building to pick up the trail again at the back left corner of the lawn.
The trail leads past a large open-sided to the right and ends at the dirt road at the bottom. Our site is just to the right on that dirt road (F2).
IF YOU ARE ARRIVING SATURDAY MORNING, DON’T EVEN ATTEMPT THE DIRT ACCESS ROAD NO MATTER IF YOU HAVE 4-WHEEL-DRIVE OR NOT. PARK AND WALK DOWN!
If conditions are poor for the hike, the boys may need to alter it to meet the program requirements.
See you all safe and sound. The boys will have a blast in the snow.

Troop 301,
For those attending the West Hills Campout, we will be meeting at the church at 3:45 pm on Friday February 10th.
We will be leaving at 4:00 pm sharp. We will not be cooking dinner at camp so figure out your own food before hand.
We will be in campsite F2 which is located as shown in the picture below (click to make bigger):
The entrance road is at the following coordinates:
Latitude 40 degrees, 48 minutes, 47.10 seconds NORTH
Longitude 73 degrees, 26 minutes, 03.94 seconds WEST
For written direction and a map there, please click HERE
The forecast is for fairly cold with possible snow flurries. Scouts need to dress for the conditions.
Bathrooms and water are nearby but NOT at the site. A picture of the site is below:
I will be adding an agenda here soon so watch this post for updates.

- The purpose of forming the Adventure Team is to take more trips on the open trails, while earning the Hiking & Backpacking merit badges.
- The trips will start in the Spring (April/May – weather permitting), but the team needs to form soon to get through the pre-trip requirements for each badge.
- The team will most likely need to meet 4 times during the next two months. Convenient dates, times and locations still need to be decided.
- All scouts must follow merit badge application rules including obtaining a blue card from an Assistant Scoutmaster.
- Once the team is formed, the scouts will decide the generation direction of the trips with MB counselors’ input. Trips will be arranged based on the abilities of the team members.

Interested in earning the
Backpacking & Hiking Merit Badges?
If so, then the new Adventure Team is for you. Joining the team will give you the opportunity to spend more time outdoors, earn two distinguished merit badges and participate in some memorable multi-day trips.
All interested scouts should print out the two merit badge workbooks, read them and contact Mr. Herrmann,
Mr. Tokarski or Mr. DeMarco by February 2nd.
Details:
1. You must be First Class rank or above to join
2. We will use the months of February & March to fulfill most of the book requirements. Trips will not begin until April.
3. Trips will vary between Hiking & Backpacking depending on a number of factors.
4. It may take up to 2 years to complete the badges, so plan accordingly.
5. Being a member of the Adventure Team does not preclude you from participating within your own patrol’s activities.
