Troop 301 is putting together a trip to Sea Base in 2015 for the Coral Reef Sailing Adventure.
A 40- to 50-foot sailing yacht will become your home for a week. It has a large self-contained galley and dining area where you will prepare wholesome meals from the fresh or canned foods supplied by Sea Base, supplemented by fresh catches from trolling while underway.
Your captain will instruct you in navigation, fishing and sailing, and will remain on board for the entire trip. You choose your own float plan to explore the beautiful Florida Keys. This trip offers one-of-a-kind snorkeling and abundant fishing. You’ll spend a “port day” back at Sea Base and have the chance to demonstrate your sailing skills in our fleet of Hunter Sailboats. This is a seven day event.
The troop normally tries to go to Sea Base during Spring Break as the weather in the Florida Keys is ideal. The Smithtown Schools calendar is not yet published for 2015, but looking at the dates of Easter (April 5, 2015) and Passover (April 3 through April 11, 2015) it is expected that school will be in recess from April 4 through April 12, 2015.
So, Troop 301 has reserved 2 boats for April 4-10, 2015.
Cost: The Troop must pay a fixed cost for each boat. Since each boat carries 6-8 people, the cost is variable. But the cost for the boat will be approximately $810-$1080 per person. Air fare to Florida is an additional cost and can be significant because you will be traveling during a holiday period. The troop itself will not arrange for air transportation, but one or more of the adult leaders attending will agree to arrange for the flights. Reimbursement for air fare will need to be made to that leader. Ground transportation in Florida s also not a fixed cost, but normally is about $150 per person round trip to go from Fort Lauderdale directly to Islamorada in a chartered van.
Requirements: A scout must be at least 13 and completed the 8th grade. Scouts scheduled to complete 8th grade in June will be permitted to sail in the Spring. This is a synopsis. The rules are governed by Sea Base. Before committing, be sure to read all the requirements at www.bsaseabase.org
Sign Up: To sign up, you need to present a check representing a $300 non-refundable deposit to Mr. Bindert by April 1, 2014. If there is overwhelming interest, we may need to hold a lottery to determine participants. In any lottery situation, priority would be given to scouts who have not had the opportunity to attend Sea Base before. Additional payments will be needed in August and the balance paid in December.
Note: By signing up you are making a commitment to the Troop and to your fellow sailors. There are a minimum number of people required for each boat to sail. If we don’t have the minimum number, everyone else on the boat could lose out. If you have to drop out for some reason, you will forfeit any monies paid. Should the school calendar change, the troop will attempt to change the reservation for the boats, but there are no guarantees that the dates can be changed.
