Scouting Experiences available at West Meadow Beach

Many BSA merit badge requirements can be fulfilled during naturalist led visits to West Meadow Beach at no charge to Brookhaven Town residents!

(A modest fee of $1 per person is charged to non residents.)

 

 

 BIRD STUDY– Requirements satisfied #’s 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7a(13).

West Meadow Beach is ideal for bird study. With over 1 mile of shoreline, extensive sand flats, 88 acres of salt marsh, and maritime forest, it provides habitat for waterfowl, shorebirds, wading birds, and song birds.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE – Requirements satisfied #’s 2, 3A(3), 3B(3), 3C(3), 3D(3), 3E(13), 4.

New York State endangered Piping Plovers breed at West Meadow Beach from April through July (3E, 1 3).

 

FISH AND WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT – Requirements satisfied #’s 1, 2, 3, 4, 6a.

An exploration of the sand flats at West Meadow Beach at low tide, followed by a hike down Trustees Road and seining in the salt marsh should easily yield 25 species of wildlife for the scouts to observe and record (6a).

 

FORESTRY – Requirements satisfied #’s 1, 3a, 6, 7a.

Although a maritime habitat, West Meadow Beach is home to many species of trees and wild shrubs (1).

 

 

NATURE – Requirements satisfied #’s 1, 2, 3, 4a(1), 4b(1 &2), 4e(1&2), 4f(1&2), 4g(1&2), 4h(1&2).

Due to the many varied habitats, West Meadow Beach is an excellent location for studying nature.

 

 

OCEANOGRAPHY – Requirements satisfied #’s 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 9.
