REMINDERS: December 1st meeting at Norway Hall and FINS permission slips due
Posted by dmbauer in Announcements on November 30, 2011
Troop 301,
Remember that we will not meet at the church for the entire month of December. The December 1st meeting will be at Norway Hall. It is on the corner of 7th Street and 4th Avenue (2 blocks east of the church and one north from Woodlawn)
There are only a few parking spots in front of the hall so please leave those for handycap access and scout drop off.
The building is small so we will be tightly packed inside. If you are not a scout and plan to stay for the meeting, please park in the large lot by the church youth hall/office and walk the two blocks up to Norway Hall.
PERMISSION SLIPS are due as are GEAR REQUEST forms for the Fire Island National Seashore campout on 12/10-12/11.
The program will be Recycle-Reduce-Reuse presented by scouts Grant H., Tommy H., and James O.

URGENT REMINDER! Leadership Position Applications DEADLINE 11/17/2011
Posted by dmbauer in Announcements on November 15, 2011
Troop 301,
If a scout wants to be considered for ANY leadership position, INCLUDING SPL and Den Chief, he must fill out the LEADERSHIP POSITION APPLICATION and turn it into the SCOUTMASTER by the NOVEMBER 17th meeting.
To date I have only received less than 10 applications.
Every position will require WEEKLY duties that are measureable and almost always include time spent outside the troop meetings.
Boys requesting consideration for positions are expected to “Do their Best” to accomplish 100% of the responsibilities of each job. If they cannot commit to 100% of the job, they should not apply.
We expect the scouts to do their best and to put in 100% effort. We do not expect PERFECTION. Scouts learn but listening and by trial and error. Mistakes are accepted and often expected. What is not accepted is a lack of effort or follow through.
As a scout advances through the ranks, he does NOT earn the right to relax. What he does earn is the right to be given a role of greater responsibility. The expectations are greater for a STAR, LIFE or EAGLE scout than for a TENDERFOOT, 2nd Class of 1st Class scout. Each successive rank requires more effort and is judged to a higher standard.
At the risk of sounding like an ARMY commercial - “BE ALL YOU CAN BE” and step up to give it your best shot.
A scout only succeeds at the challenges he takes on.
Mr. Bauer

Posted by dmbauer in Announcements on November 9, 2011
Troop 301,
- The Turkey Cookout is the weekend of November 11th thru the 13th. The troop is providing the dinner at no charge to all but we ask that each family bring a desert to share. The desert should be enough to feed a little more than a family and not for 100 people.
- Green Troop Fleeces will be being ordered shortly (Jim Dodd will take orders on November 17th). If you do not have one or need an additional or replacement one, NOW IS THE TIME.
- REMINDER – The deadline for turning in you form is NOVEMBER 17th.
Marcos P’s Eagle Project Tuesday November 8th!
Posted by dmbauer in Announcements on November 7, 2011
Troop 301 Scouts,
Your SPL will be working on his Eagle Project Tuesday November 8th from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm.
The project is a dog walk behind the Smithtown Animal shelter on Route 25 to the right of Smithtown Ford and the Senior Center.
He could use a lot of help and this time counts as COMMUNITY SERVICE toward advancement.
As there is no school, there should be a lot of scouts available to attend.
Please do the right thing and help him out.
Mr. Bauer
Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Cookout at Smithtown Historic Society 11/12/2011
Posted by dmbauer in Announcements on November 4, 2011
Troop 301,
We will be having out Thanksgiving campout and Turkey cook the weekend of 11/11 thru 11/13.
We will be camping Friday night on the grounds of the Smithtown Historic Society and we will be staying in the encampment area behind and to the right of the Blacksmith shop. (Click on the picture below)
The official address is 239 East Main Street in the Villiage of the Branch. (Directly across from the Smithtown United Methodist Church)
When you enter the driveway, you will be facing the BLACKSMITH SHOP
General parking for all (non-handycapped) is in the field to the left of the front of the Blacksmith Shop.
Plan to arrive at the park at between 4:30 pm & 5:00 pm (EAT DINNER BEFORE YOU COME AS WE WILL NOT BE COOKING FRIDAY).
See the SPL for where to set up.
Family members coming to join the scouts for our turkey dinner should come at 2:00 pm Saturday. Please bring a desert to share.
If you want to see the birds as they come out of the cans, 1:00 pm is likely when you want to arrive.
The PREDITORS patrol will be cooking CORN.
The PANTHERS patrol will be cooking the GREEN BEANS.
The COBRA patrol will be cooking STUFFING.
The BLACK RAVEN patrol will be washing, wrapping and cooking the whole fresh SWEET POTATOES.
The SPL and ASPL will be preparing the GRAVY & CRANBERRY SAUCE
The OLD GOAT PATROL (uniform leaders) will be cooking the CORN BREAD.
The COMMITTEE will be cooking the EIGHT turkeys.
NOTE: ANYONE WHO HAS GIVEN A HOME TO A TURKEY NEEDS TO BRING IT TO THE SITE WASHED AND READY TO COOK BY 11:00 AM SATURDAY!
There will NOT be a hike Saturday morning but instead the scouts will be showcasing their PIONEERING skills and will need to bring a bag lunch and water for that time.
Pioneering will be setup behind the yellow house to the right of the Blacksmith Shop.
Dinner is planned for 2:00 pm.
All patrols need to provide their own Breakfast for Saturday and Sunday mornings. THE BREAKFASTS NEED TO BE “REAL MEAKS”! (No Shake & Pour) Oatmeal is OK.
We expect Cub scouts and their families from local packs to be joining us. Make them feel welcome.
If you have special needs of equipment outside what is in your patrol boxes, contact the NEW troop quartermaster ASAP! (Ross P.)
We will NOT be meeting at the church before heading to the site.
Happy Thanksgiving SCOUT STYLE!
Mr. Bauer
