Posted by dmbauer in Announcements on September 23, 2010
Troop 301,
The troop will be manning a booth at St. James day as usual.
We need scout families to supply baked goods to be sold. These need to be packaged for easy sale (small groups of cookies, small cakes etc and wrapped in clear wrapping please).
Scouts will also be selling popcorn and should be in FULL CLASS A uniforms for the event.
Setup time is at 8:00 am in front of Dairy Barn on Lake Ave.
Watch the troop site and this post for further information and call Maureen Calamia at 584-0122 with any questions.
A scout is LOYAL to his troop and HELPFUL.

Important news for Saturday September 25th and Bradley Shutka.
Posted by Bobby in Announcements on September 21, 2010
Troop 301,
Charlie Shutka is a former Scoutmaster for BSA Troop 301. On March 25th 2010 Charlie and his wife Meg were blessed with the birth of a grandson named Bradley. Sadly doctors determined that Bradley Shutka was born with a rare intestinal disorder that requires him to receive all nutrients intravenously. The disorder is manageable but the costs to the family are enormous. Troop 301 with the help of our Charter organization, The Saint James Lutheran Church, are having a carwash to raise funds to help the Shutka family with Bradley’s treatment costs. The carwash fundraiser will be held in the youth center parking lot on September 25thbetween 10AM and 2PM. Please join us and help the Shutka family.
Location will be the big parking lot at the church by the youth hall.
Date – 9/25 10AM – 2PM
Adult Leader – Dana Pedone
SPL for the event – Weston Yates
ASPL for the event – Alex Becker

Yet another great loss to the Troop 301 family
Posted by dmbauer in Announcements on September 18, 2010
Troop 301,
Back on June 20th of this year, I posted the sad news of the passing of one of the mothers of two boys in our troop.
Today, it is with great sadness that I find it necessary to post the loss of yet another member of our family. She was another mother of two boys in our troop and another taken from us by cancer.
On the morning of Friday September 17th, Dr. Judy Gavorsky finally rested from her bravely fought battle with cancer.
She will be greatly missed by the troop and especially friends and family. Josh and Ryan as well as their father Gary should be kept in out thoughts in the time to come.
Dr. Judy was not only a friend to our troop but a committee member and acted as the Life to Eagle adviser for the boys.
She helped her community as a Chiropractor and of course raising two fine young scouts in Ryan and Josh.
Her work was not done but she has been taken from us.
Cancer is a cruel disease. Do not take those you love for granted and don’t be afraid to show it.
The Gavorsky family will be having a brief service at their home on Sunday September 19th for Dr. Judy. Please arrive at noon to:
9 Penn Drive in Smithtown
If you can not make the service but would still like to join the family and friends to share thoughts and memories of Dr. Judy, please arrive at 2:00 pm.
Scouts and Uniformed leaders please attend in FULL CLASS A uniform to show respect.
Thank you,
Mr. Bauer

Permission Slips DUE 9/16 for Canoeing the Nissequogue River
Posted by dmbauer in Announcements on September 5, 2010
Troop 301,
Canoeing the Nissequogue River followed by
Camping at Hoyt Farm
September 18-19, 2010
For the first overnight event of the season Troop 301 will be canoeing the Nissequogue River. After canoeing we will move to Hoyt Farm for overnight camping. This should be a great local event to get everyone back into Scouting.
We will meet in the parking lot across the street from the Smithtown Bull on 25A (on the south side just east of the trestle) on Saturday 9/18 at 7:15 AM. Bob’s Canoes is outfitting the trip up the Nissequogue. But, we all need to make sure we have a minimum of sunscreen, bug spray, fresh water, and a bag lunch (in a zipper bag). The canoeing portion of the event will conclude at Short Beach approximately 3 hours after we start. At that time we will eat lunch, Bob will collect all his canoes, and we will need parent’s assistance to transport Scouts (and their camping gear) to Hoyt Farm.
Typically group camping season at Hoyt Farm concludes with the Labor Day Holiday, but Smithtown Parks and the Hoyt Farm Ranger have both agreed to make an exception for Troop 301. So let’s make sure this is a successful trip! Patrols should plan on preparing dinner Saturday and breakfast Sunday.
Activity Fee: Due to some very successful fundraising events last year, Troop 301 will be paying the activity fee for participating Scouts and Uniformed Leaders. So for Scouts, there is no Activity Fee! But there will be a cost for food to be paid to your patrol. Parents are welcome to attend, but the activity fee will be $30 to cover costs.
Permission Slips: Normally Permission Slips are due two meetings before an event. But since there is only one troop meeting before this event, we will need to adapt our procedure. We need names of Scouts, leaders, and any parents to obtain the proper BSA permits. So, if you are going to participate, you must do two things: You must email Mr. Bindert (brian.bindert@gmail.com) by Thursday, September 9, 2010. Then you must hand in a Permission Slip at the troop meeting on Thursday September 16, 2010.
Safety Note: If you are not a blue swimmer (or you don’t know what it means to be a blue swimmer), you need to notify Mr. Ettari that you are not a blue swimmer and you are planning to participate. BSA regulations require that we follow some additional precautions.

Be Prepared.

First PLC on the 1st day of school (September 7th)!
Posted by dmbauer in Announcements on September 5, 2010
Troop 301 leaders,
Remember, our first PLC of the new scouting year is on TUESDAY September 7th at the CHURCH.
All leaders need to be there!
If you have a REALLY good reason you can’t make it, you need to send a representative AND inform both myself and the SPL why you will not be there as well as whom you have assigned to fill in.
See you then and check the calendar as our WEBMASTER has put up many of the upcoming dates.
Mr. Bauer
