What’s my Job – Troop Leadership Positions
Posted by dmbauer in Announcements on April 29, 2010
Troop wide leaders,
Ever wonder what duties you have in your role as a troop level boy leader? [...and were maybe to lazy to look it up]
BSA has this all covered and you should know this as it is against these duties that you will be judged as well as the requirements outlined in the BYLAWS you all read and signed…..RIGHT?
To make it easy for you I have extracted the leadership definitions from a BSA training document and placed them on the “FORMS” page of this website.
You all signed up to be evaluated (good and bad) every 3 months…..Guess what?….It’s that time
BE PREPARED!

PAYMENT DUE – BAITING HOLLOW SUMMER CAMP
Posted by dmbauer in Announcements on April 29, 2010
Troop 301,
As with every year, we attend the 2nd week of summer camp at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp.
This year, the 2nd week is actually the 3rd week of July (July 18th through July 24th).
Details about the summer camp will be coming soon but for an overview, please visit BHSC website at:
http://baitinghollowscoutcamp.org/
You can also download the brochure at the following link:
http://baitinghollowscoutcamp.org/BSsummer/bsbrochure.pdf
The leaders guide for camp is now available by right clicking on the link below and selecting “save target as”.
http://baitinghollowscoutcamp.org/YRcamping/Leader’s_Guide_2010-rev1.pdf
Please note that camp is $275.00 for the week (includes food) if paid before May 1st. The troop does not get a discount so this is a “pass along”. If payment is not in before May 1st, the price goes up to $295.00 per scout.
Please see Mrs. Bindert to signup and arrange to pay.
It is usually a lot of fun and I actually take a weeks vacation to be there 24/7 with the troop as do a couple of other Scoutmasters.
This is also one of the fastest ways the boys can earn Merit Badges and learn SCOUT SKILLS.

The vote was close but the 2nd Summer Camp will be MINSI
Posted by dmbauer in Announcements on April 25, 2010
Troop 301,
Results were approximately 20% = no camp, 35% = Catskills an 45% = Minsi
The choices were below:
| Black bear campground in Phoenicia (Private in Catskills) | Camp Minsi Boy Scout Camp | |
| Where would it be | Phoenicia NY(near Hunter Mountain) | Pocono Pines Pennsylvania |
| Car Ride from Church | 3-1/2 hours | 3 hours |
| Dates | 6-11 August (Friday to Wednesday) | 7-11 August (Sat to Wednesday) |
| Camp Site Activites | All activities near by and not onsite. | Canoeing, Archery, swimming, canoeing, fishing hiking camping etc. (we are on our own) |
| Camping Facility | Camp site (we use our tents) | Weytrex Cabin (Both sides sleep 35) |
| Fishing | Yes (catch and release) | Yes (catch and release) |
| Baseball Game | No | Yes |
| Bike Ride | Yes – We can use the country roads for a road bike trip or Go to Hunter Mountain where we can use the ski lifts to bring us up (extra charge) the mountain for biking. At Belleayre we can use all the cross country ski trails for mountain biking at no charge. | Yes (we have lots passes) and the trip would be on an old railway surface and basically down hill. |
| Camp Site Cost | $10 per scout per night so for 20 scouts for 5 nights = $1,000 Tubing: Town Tinker Tubing offers tubing on the Esopus. Cost range at $20-30 depending on the equipment we need (PFDs, Helmets, wetsuits) Hopefully water release dates coincides with our stay. Release dates have not yet been publicized. For ages 12 and older Swimming: Belleayre Beach at Pine Hill Lake – a place for the whole family. They offer swimming, picnicking, horseshoe pits, volleyball, basketball, row boat, pedal boat and kayak rentals, fishing and great relaxation!. ALL FOR $2.00 PER PERSON for the day (or $8.00 per carload) |
$100 per night or $400 for the four nights. We can borrow canoes, archery, swimming, fishing at no cost. Tubing and whitewater nearby in the same place we do Whitewater Rafting trip and at similar costs to those in the Catskills. |
| Food Costs (estimate) | $60 for six days | $40 for four days |
| Baseball Ticket | N/A | $10 |
| Bike Ride Cost | Assume a cost of $20-30 per scout (plus lift ticket for hunter) | Assume $20 plus free pass. |
| Hiking and Backpacking | There are numerous trail choices that range from 1 1/2 mile round trip to as much as 10 miles. For those who want to do a 20 mile hike for one of the Hiking Merit badge requirements we can hike along the mostly abandoned railroad bed. |
Minsi offers not overly challenging hiking but a fairly large choice of hikes on the grounds of the campsite. See camp map at:http://campminsi.fileave.com/Camp%20Minsi%20-%20Trail%20Map.pdf |
| COPE type things | This summer at Hunter Mountain a zip-line system will be opening. There will be 3 different levels. The most extreme has sections that are 600 feet above the ground. It is being billed as the Longest and Highest in North America. Not many details but it is about a 2 1/2 hour tour that will cost near $100. The less extreme tours are less costly. I was told to watch the website for more details and opening dates. (This is likely only available for boys 13 and older due to BSA rules) |
Not available |
| Estimate Cost per scout: | If you do nothing but camp and hike/backpack the min. would be ~$110 for six days (~$18 per day per scout) If you do most things except the zip line (up to $100 more) it will be in the area of $180 or ~ $30 per day per scout. | $90 to $115 for everything |
| Good Points | It’s the Catskills with beautiful views and lots of higher adventure available as well as near by activities. | Weytrex Cabin. Bunks, big inside for night and rain activity. Water, bathroom, shower, refrigerator in cabin. The camp is familiar and big for many things. |
| Bad Points | This is not a BSA Camp so the “in camp activities” are very limited. Almost everything comes at an additional cost and requires some travel to that activity. Cost can be almost double that of Minsi for similar activities. | Troop has been to Minsi often. Draining Lake after 7 August to fix dam; may affect swimming. |

FUND RAISING with the 911 MEDICAL CARD
Posted by nekollena in Announcements on April 24, 2010
Many in our troop will remember that in the Fall of 2008 I led a fund raising program where the Scouts sold the new ICE(incase of emergency) Cards. This fund raiser netted the Troop around $700. Since then I have been working with my cousin as he brings this new product to market, and this Tuesday April 27 on the CBS morning TV show “The Doctors” it will be discussed and recommended to their viewers. In the past 18 months many improvements have been made and it is leading the industry in digital personal health records. No one has a finer product and there are no monthly or annual fees to have this card. The holders of the Medical Card have been guaranteed free downloads of any improvements. The retail price of the card is $39.99 but you can purchase the card with my Promo Code at a one time cost of $34.99. By using the Promo Code BSA301 you not only save $5.00 but ALSO $5.00 will go to Troop 301 to help pay for badges, equipment and other needs. With this card there is no better way to keep yours and your families’ health records. One card can hold information for up to 10 family members. You can check out more information and make a purchase on the website www.metromedicalid.com. Thank you

Troop 301,
The church is looking for ~6 boys to plant flowers in a couple of flower beds (by the garage and by our shed) from 10:00 am until 12:00 noon on Saturday the 24th of April.

This will count as community service hours!

PACK 228 looking for DEN CHIEF (As was announced at the meeting)
Posted by dmbauer in Announcements on April 20, 2010
Troop 301,
As was announced and I spoke to some individually, Pack 228 is in need of a few boys to take the role of Den Chief.
This is a great way to build a relationship with boys that could cross over into Troop 301 and it also qualifies as “leadership” credit toward advancement.
This is to be for right NOW and not just in September.
There are only a few more Den meetings left for most of them before the summer break.
Please see Mr. Bauer or Mr. Herrmann for contact information at Pack 228.
Many boys in the past have done this including our newest Eagle and ASM, Travis.
Please consider.
A Scout is HELPFUL.

Merit Badges – Who should be doing which ones?
Posted by dmbauer in Announcements on April 16, 2010
Troop 301,
Many of the boys look forward to doing badges. Some may actually be being pushed into doing them.
Merit badges can be a very rewarding and educational thing but it is also important that the boys do them when they can get the most out of them.
Scouting is not a race. It is a development process. Not all boys develop at the same rate emotionally or physically. This is not a bad thing or a good thing. It is a FACT!
We strongly encourage all boys under the rank of 1st class to concentrate their efforts on the skills taught and required to travel that path to 1st class. These are the FOUNDATIONAL skills for their whole scouting career and could SAVE THEIR LIFE or the life of someone else.
Wearing the rank of 1st class shows you have learned those extremely important skills well enough to teach them to others. The founder of scouting (Robert Baden-Powell) once said that a scout is not truly a scout until he has reached the rank of 1st class.
All of this said, scouting must be FUN and part of that fun is earning merit badges.
We have put together a “suggested” list of what badges a boy should consider based on where he is in his scouting career. These are suggestions base on our experience as leaders and merit badge counselors.
Because a boy’s development level is critical to getting the most out of a scouting merit badge, a boy seeking to do a badge should ask for the required blue card from Mr. McClafferty or Mr. Anello. Mr. McClafferty is very familiar with many of the badge requirements for a large number of the badges offered and Mr. Anello has a great deal of experience with many of the outdoor badges. Both are Eagle Scouts and have done this in their own past.
Feel free to ask questions of us as scouts. We are REALLY here to help.
The list can be found near the bottom of the “FORMS” page found by clicking on the tab at the top of the main page marked FORMS.
Mr. Bauer
P.S. It can also be found by clicking HERE.
THREE SEATS OPEN FOR BOSTON!
Posted by dmbauer in Announcements on April 14, 2010
All,
As it turns out, Michael C. and his father will not be able to attend Boston so these seats have opened up for any scout(s) or parents of scouts that want to come along.
Seats are $65 each and include more than just the ride (see the Boston post further below which I will move to the top after the Spring Camporee).
The two tickets belong to Michael but there is a third so interested parties need to speak to Mr. McGarry.
The trip is coming very soon (APRIL 24th).
Join the fun,
Mr. Bauer
