On April 24, 2010, Troop 301 will be traveling by coach bus to visit historic Boston, MA and hike the Freedom Trail.
Families are welcome, but space is limited to the first 55 people who sign up with their non-refundable deposits. Signup requires a Troop 301 permission slip and payment or authorization to use scout account funds. See Brian Bindert or Jim Dodd for information or to sign up.

The troop is leaving St. James Lutheran Church at 4:30 AM (Sharp!) on Saturday April 24th for this all day trip. Bagels and juice will be provided on the bus. We expect to arrive in Boston around 10:00 AM. Bring water and snacks or energy bars as lunch will be somewhat after noon time. For dinner we will stop at a restaurant, tentatively a Hometown Buffet in Connecticut.
Tentative itinerary and admission prices:
- Leave Saint James Lutheran Church at 4:30 AM Sharp – plan on getting to the church by 4:15 AM!
- Arrival at the Charlestown Navy Yard and the USS Constitution – all visitors are subject to a screening process so leave your pocket knives at home – 30 minute tours start at 10:30 (we are estimating 75-90 minutes)
- Back on the bus to the Bunker Hill Monument and Bunker Hill Museum – 221 foot climb up a spiral stairway to the top (estimate 45-60 minutes)
- Again, back on the bus to go over the river and past Copp’s Hill Burying Ground
- Drop off at Old North Church – one if by land… – 10 minute guided tour $3
- Hike to the Paul Revere House – $3 adults, $1 kids
- Hike to Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market – lunch, which is on your own, at any of a variety of food vendors – also, historical talks on the half hour (estimate 75 minutes)
- Hike to Old State House Museum – Boston’s oldest public building – site of the Boston Massacre (apparently that did not involve the Yankees beating the Red Sox) – museum – $5 adults, $1 kids, combo ticket may be available (estimate 45 minutes)
- Hike to Old South Meeting House – Sam Adams gave the word to start the Boston Tea Party here – $5 adults, $1 kids, combo ticket may be available (estimate 45 minutes)
- Hike the remainder of the Freedom Trail passing:
- Old Corner Bookstore
- Boston Latin School
- Benjamin Franklin Statue
- King’s Chapel and Burying Ground
- Granary Burying Ground
- Park Street Church
- The State House (unfortunately not open for tours on the weekend)
- Finish the Freedom Trail at the Boston Common Visitor Center, with bus pickup around 5:30 PM
- Stop for dinner approximately 90 minutes from Boston, tentatively at a Hometown Buffet restaurant in Manchester, CT (estimate 75-90 minutes)
- Return to Saint James
Fee: $65 per person includes bus transportation, bagels and juice in the morning, and buffet dinner.
Additional costs: admission fees estimated at $16 for adults, $6 for those under 18, plus lunch. Scouts should bring cash for admission fees and either additional cash for lunch or a bag lunch..
